Dog Training Commands

Training sessions should be fun, enjoyable and short, not lasting more than 5-10 minutes. Dogs can learn things fast but lose interest quickly if the same thing is taught repeatedly for hours. They have a short attention span. You should try to appeal your dog with his favorite treats if he doesn’t seem interested for even a minute. Be consistent in your training because keeping long gap between training periods may not yield better results.

After finishing up with basic commands, you can teach your dog with advanced dog training commands too. But before that, let’s look at how to teach them the following basic commands.

Sit: This is the first basic command that you should be teaching your dog with. Just hold a treat in your hand and take it closer to your dog’s nose. Give the “sit” command and move the treat over his head slowly towards his tail. In this process, your dog is sure to sit down automatically while following the treat with his nose. Give him the treat and praise him for few seconds. Now, you can again start this process.

Stay: Dogs can really mess up your sweet home when he’s in the hyperactive mood. At such times, “stay” command can be extremely very useful. To teach this command to your dog, make him sit first. Then put your open palm about eight inches in front of his nose and give him “stay” command. Move back one step and return back immediately. Praise your dog for staying. Repeat the same process by moving back two or more steps after that. Include few distractions to test if he has learnt the “stay” command or not.

Recall: When you take your dog outdoors, there are chances that your dog may run after something distracting. The “recall” dog training command can be useful in such times. Start training this command by staying in a few feet of distance from your dog. Utter his name and give “recall” command. When your dog comes back to you, you should praise him or give him a treat.

If you start training these basic dog training commands to your dog from early on for few minutes every day, then your dog can easily master them and be ready for more advanced commands as well. A dog who can understand your language can be a great family member for whose behavior, you will never have to apologize to others.
